Weekly Wine – Gray Fox

23 Nov

1123gfcharGray Fox Chardonnay
2015
USA
750ml
13% ABV
$8.55 (LCBO)

I look at this label with a bit of trepidation.
On the one hand foxes are good looking animals.
On the other they are known to be sly and mischievous.
The one on this bottle looks cute. It looks at me invitingly. Try me it beckons.
But what lies beneath those imploring eyes and the screw cap is a mystery. I must find out.
The first sip is Nasty. So is the second. It is sourish and a little sweet – that’s the chardonnay speaking. There are apples here and lemons I think. But it is sour… not the super unpleasant kind of sour, just the kind like the candy kids eat.
I don’t want that in a wine.

Weekly Wine – Sangria

750ml
7% ABV
$7.40 (LCBO)

Technically this is not wine. It is a wine drink. A wine beverage.
I’m making an exception because I like Sangria on a hot day. So … Sangria wine beverages are OK but the other stuff is not.
I made that decision before I tried this mine.
In one word… Chemicalicious.
I don’t really taste the wine.
I taste citrus fruit – that is plain. I feel the alcohol. And I get a big dose of the manufacturing process.
This is more like a cooler than a Sangria.
When you sip it, it is strangely refreshing but more like drinking a soft drink or soda. You want some more of that to fulfill the unfulfillable. This stuff is too sweet as well – like a cola. I’m sure underage, first time drinkers, will love this because it is not much different than a Mountain Dew or similar concoction.
This stuff, and I’m using the word stuff on purpose, is cheap. And that is not even enough to give it any redemption.

Desert growth

Flying over the desert in California – these irrigation areas look very cool from the air. However they are wasting so much water in an area that has been in a consistent drought for many years. Not sure if this is wise.
I have spent too much time trying to find this place on Google Earth with no luck.

Cuba

22 Mar

I’ve been to Cuba twice – both times for beach vacations.
Both times the resorts, while beautiful and great, were in the middle of nowhere.
They were too far for a trip to Havana.
It is hard for me to realize that a US president beat me to Havana.
Good job President Obama…

Thankful for Thanksgiving

26 Nov

Today it is Yankee Thanksgiving –I do celebrate it.
I eat the turkey and watch the football – NFL style.
I also try to think of something to be thankful for. Well something besides health, family, friends and such.bu
Where does one find something to be thankful for in a world of tears? Where does one find reaffirmation of the spirit of humanity in a world that is on the edge?
In politics?
In the arts?
In science?
Nope.
In a newspaper’s strange news section…
There was a story about a man watching burlesque video in an adult emporium in Hamburg, Germany. The store caught on fire, but the man refused to leave until his private screening had finished. The firefighters came and had to physically remove him from the flame engulfed smoked filled premises.
This is dedication. This is complete insanity. This is standing tall when the chips are down.
This is what I can be thankful for – that there are people in the world with principles that will not let anything get in the way of satisfaction.

Weekly Wine – Doggy

7 Oct

SONY DSCChateau La Paws Chardonnay
Year: N/A
USA
750ml
13% ABV
$9.80 (USA)
A wine that helps dogs in shelters – a win-win situation. This is a fairly typical chardonnay, a little sweetish with a nice body. It is rather smooth and does not have much tartness to it. It might have gone down better if I had tasted it out of a nice wine glass, or in fact out of any drinking vessel made out of glass. But this was purchased on a road trip in the USA and the only drinking device present were plastic cups. The wine is nice but unremarkable and lacks any kind of bold or unique characteristic. You can pick it up if you are concerned about sheltering dogs but there are much more interesting wines at this price. But still – it is not a bad wine.

Weekly Wine – Moscato

26 Aug

Barefoot Moscato
2014
USA
750ml
9% ABV
$9.95 (LCBO)

This is an OK wine. It is nice when well chilled and OK at regular room temperature. It is a nice light wine that has a quite fruity flavour that imparts a sweetness to it. But it is not really a sweet wine. It is not really dry.
This wine confuses me.
I do not know if I like it. I do not know if I dislike it. Hate and love are too strong of words to use for this wine as its colour, flavour and alcohol content are quite week.
The label says that it is “deliciously sweet.” It is not too delicious nor is it sweet.
It, is, as I said at the top, an OK wine. Just under ten bucks regular price but it was on sale so I picked it up for $8.95.
That’s a sweet deal.
