This is authentic mariachi music.
How do I know? I don’t. But I feel that it is.
It was recorded in Mexico sometime before I was born by an mariachi ensemble that has existed since 1942.
So this was created before the wave od disillusioned Vietnam vets started their recovery in Mexico. This is still before the waves of tourists started hitting the coastal areas of Mexico. This was well before the narco-wars started to rip the country apart. This is way before there was talk of deportations and walls.
This was made when Mexico was still rather raw.
Mariachi is like the ceremonial sombreros that tourists lug home from their holidays. Sure, they are kitchy but they do have an authentic ceremonial purpose.
The mariachi music on this album is full of life and joy. It is wonderful to listen to this on a grey winter day – it lifts the spirit.

Tropical beer

19 Dec

I brought some beer back from Jamaica – six cans of Red Stripe.
The beer tasted great on the beach in Jamaica.
My friend brought me some beer from Mexico – six cans of Dos Equis.
The beer tasted great the last time I had it on a beach in Mexico.
However…
As I drink these beers at home, looking forlornly at the winterscape outside my window, the beers are just OK. They do not take me back to the beach. They do not make me pine for the beach.
The beers were good there, in the heat and humidity. Here, I want mere body, more hops. I want a good well flavoured beer. I won’t spill these out but I will seek out better drink for the winter.

Chilling on a beach

SONY DSC

This photo was taken a few years ago in Tulum, Mexico.
It was a hot day but there was a nice breeze on the beach. As I stood on a cliff above the beach there was a bunch aof people cavorting noisily on my left. This woman was having a serene moment – she was on my left.

Mexican Trike

1 May

SONY DSCI saw this trike in Mexico, in the town of Tulum. The town that is adjacent to the ruins.
Obviously, this is a vehicle one cannot purchase. One must craft it.
I have a welding machine.
I have the desire.
The little voice in my head asks – can you get this thing licensed for the road?
This is a project… to consider.

Metal Mariachi

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
At a resort in Mexico, these metal statues represent mariachi players that were silent. I was actually hoping to hear some music. But the only sound was of tourists cavorting gleefully.
