Weekly Wine – Alta CS

1 Feb

fuzalt_csFuzion Alta Cabernet Sauvignon
2015
Argentina
750ml
13.5% ABV
$9.95 (LCBO)

I drank this wine’s cousin a while back. It was the Malbec wine.
This is the cabernet sauvignon grape.
And this wine is all right.
The best thing about it is that the price has not changed in the last three years. I drank that bottle in October 2013. WOW.
Well not really wow. The Argentinean economy has been down quite a bit so that explains why this wine hasn’t gone over ten bucks.
This wine has a very nice colour and a very nice balance. It is a very nice standard table wine that will not offend anybody but those that are making airs of being wine connoisseurs. Those people should be served real crap. I have a list if you need it.
But I digress…
This wine will not win many, if any, awards and you might not remember it next morning. But that’s OK. It is a good wine that is meant to be drunk.
Cheers.

Weekly Wine – Astica White

Trapiche Astica Sauvignon Blanc – Semillon
2015
Argentina
750ml
13% ABV
$7.95 (LCBO)

I had this wine three years ago. It was the 16th wine that I reviewed for the blog.
Now it will also be the 177th wine. My how time flies.
The review is there – https://tonalsurge.wordpress.com/2013/07/24/weekly-wine-astica/
And a few things have changed since then.
One is the label. It is a bit more modern looking – a bit more hip.
The second – and this is important. It is a much better wine. The harsh tones are gone – it is so much smoother. I opened this with some friends and they were surprised that it was under ten bucks.
It is a perfect wine for relaxing in the back yard. Perfect summer barbecue wine.
The previous wine was a 2012 vintage – this is a 2015. Perhaps the vintage has made it better. Perhaps the winery smoothed out the process.
Whatever.
It is a great wine.
One thing that did not change with this wine is the price. Take that inflation … this wine is under eight bucks.

Weekly Wine – Fuzion Alta

SONY DSCFuzion Alta Malbec
2011
Argentina
750ml
13.5% ABV
$9.95 (LCBO)

Is this just a marketing trick?
Is this just a cheap attempt at raising the price on an inexpensive wine?
Is this wine really that much better than the regular Fusion?
Is it worth the extra two bucks that it commands than the regular Fuzion Malbec?
No.
Not worth the two bucks.
If you are into the Math stuff that is a 25 percent increase in cost.
It is not 25 percent better.
Honestly it is very much the same. A good standard wine.
I like it – this Alta wine – but I will buy the regular one next time.

Weekly Wine — Trapiche

SONY DSCTraphice Cabernet Sauvignon

2012
Argentina
$9.45 (LCBO)
750ml
13.5% ABV

Another fine Australian wine under the magic ten spot. And it is a good one. I bought this bottle ant took it over to a friends. I got a complement because they have this tendency to believe that I am a plonk fanatic. I was actually going to bring a different bottle of wine but there was a mix-up and this was presented, consumed and complemented.
The wine is nice with some subtle flavours and even though the label says it contains sulfites I was hard pressed to taste them. I was actually surprised that this wine was so good. I remember that this wine was just OK a few years back. Perhaps the 2012 “vintage” year was good in Argentina and that years wines will be good.
I must try some more.

Weekly Wine – Fuzion Rose

28 Aug

Fuzion RoseFuzion Shiraz Rose
2012
Argentina
750ml
13% ABV
$7.90 (LCBO)

Red Fuzion wine, reviewed April 24 in this blog, set the inexpensive wine world alight when it was introduced a few years back. Inexpensive wines became tolerated in rarefied circles. So will Fuzion’s entry into the Rose sphere do the same? (There is a white wine I think, but I have not gotten to it yet.)

There is a reason that Fuzion will not have the sane impact on the rose market as it had on the red wine market. Inexpensive and moderately priced wines dominate the rose market. At best this wine will make a ripple in the marketplace.

And to be fair, this wine is fair. It is a light rose that is refreshing and has no real nasty aftertastes. It is OK. It has to be said that I have never had an excellent rose. They have always been either good or bad. Off or on. No matter what the price point. I have had much worse rose wines that have cost twice the price of this on.

Fusion is a rose. It is a good rose. It is a good rose that is very inexpensive.

Weekly Wine – Misterio

7 Aug

SONY DSCMisterio Malbec
2012
Argentina
750ml
13.5% ABV
$8.95 (LCBO)

This could just be a four word review — I like this wine. I really do. I like the Malbec grape. It has this nice spicy quality to it. There is no aftertaste. There are no lingering flavours that spoil the experience of drinking this wine. It is a simple wine with very little complexity. A fine drinking wine if you will.
It is a damn sight better than the Misterio Cabernet Sauvignon I wrote about on the 29th of May. But I liked that wine too. This one is better. I like the spiciness of this wine. It has a sharp distinct bite on the tongue as one drinks it. It is not unpleasant and tells you that you are consuming something interesting.
It is inexpensive and most people in Ontario know that fact since we all shop at the LCBO. No one has ever brought this wine when we host people because of the price point. You don’t want to bring “cheap” wine. But…If it was five bucks more people would bring it because it would be more respectable as a gift. The wine would be the same. But don’t raise the price please. I like it the way it is.

Weekly Wine – Astica

24 Jul

AsticaTrapiche Astica Sauvignon Blanc – Semillon
2012
Argentina
750ml
13% ABV
$7.95 (LCBO)

I had no idea that they made white wine in Argentina when I pulled this bottle off the shelf. It just never occurred to me. I like the winery Trapiche as they make sove very decent inexpensive red wines.

The first thing that struck me about this wine was the very faint pale yellow colour of the wine itself. You can’t see it in the picture because the bottle was empty when I took this picture. For some reason the colour of this wine did not appeal to me. The taste of the wine was also rather thin. There were a bit of harsh tones in the aftertaste but these were not too objectable. The wine is fine when chilled but gets progressively harder to drink as it warms up. At room temperature it is not bad, but one wishes it was chilled. It’s a mildly fair wine at a very affordable price. Probably good to make sangria blanca or wine spritzers if you are into that sort of thing.
