Weekly Wine – Volcanes

SONY DSCVolcanes Summit Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot
2011
Chile
750ml
14% ABV
$9.95 (LCBO)

I love the label of this wine. Kudos to the designer/art department that did this. It is modern, classic, compelling, tasteful and striking all at the same time. I’m sure there were debates to make the design more striking as benefits a volcano name. I’m glad those arguments did not hold sway.
As for the wine… it is not bad but does not live up to my appreciation of the label. It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes and this does cause some interesting taste mélange but there is a harshness in the taste of the wine. The taste conveys an ambiance of the final bottle after a night of overindulging. I shudder to speculate that the label is just a good marketing device for an average wine. But that is what it is.
It is average, and that is what is disappointing. There is no volcanic explosion of interesting flavour or subtexts. There is no lightning strike of brilliant flavour. (There is a lightning depicted on the label since there is usually lightning activity around an erupting volcano because of the friction of all the dust particles.)
Volcanes is not a bad wine. It is a fair wine with a great label.
