Weekly Wine – Szekszardi

10 Apr

SONY DSC

Szekszardi Voros Kekfrankos
2009
Hungary
1 Litre
12% ABV
$9.95 (LCBO)

The price is good. The quantity, one litre (10000 ml) as opposed to the regular 750ml, is good. The taste – good. You won’t mistake this wine for something a sommelier would recommend or even enjoy at the tail end of a three-day bender. But I have had much worse wines disguised as table wines in restaurants. This wine is dry. Remarkably so. It has a tart, crisp flavour. After the first sip of the wine I am always tempted to have some water. This might be a result of the sulphites but nevertheless; at this price point much can be forgiven. At 12% it has a nice bit of a kick to it as well. It is one of my favourite wines that I pick up quite often.
